PROPER USAGE AND MAINTENANCE

Proper usage and maintenance is vital for getting the most out of the valuable resources we have. Our designs are made to last for generations, but just like everything else, they need a little care to get there.

TEAK

Origin

Teak is commonly found in Southeast Asia, Central and South America. Our FSC-certified Teak comes from Central America, Brazil and Indonesia, while our non-certified teak comes from plantations in Southeast Asia and Trinidad; managed to sustain a renewable and reliable supply of wood.

Why

Teak is a heavy, hard and sturdy type of wood. The high content of natural oils makes it highly resistant and it is therefore a good choice for household articles and furniture.

Cleaning

For regular cleaning use a suitable cleaning agent for wood.

Maintenance

As the wood is untreated the surface will patinate and change colour over time into a beautiful silvery grey. To maintain untreated wood, it is a good idea to use sandpaper (grit 120-150) once or twice a year.

OAK

Origin

Oak grows in most temperate zones. The Skagerak oak comes from European forests and is either 100% FSC certified or FSC mix certified, supporting sustainable forest management. The selection of the wood is extremely careful and all processing is by hand, so that only the best and most durable pieces of wood are used in production.

Why

Oak is a sturdy and hardwearing type of wood containing natural tannins that will protect against bacterial growth. Combined with its light, elegant colour and well-defined grains, this makes oak wood safe choice for high-quality interior.

Cleaning

The wood comes with no finish. If you choose not to treat it with soap or oil, use a suitable cleaning agent for wood.

Maintenance

As the wood is untreated it may be affected by grease and colorants. For this reason, we recommend saturating the wood with soap or a suitable furniture oil to make it more resistant. If you wish to use soap or oil, use a suitable product. Be aware that the wood will change colour when applying soap or oil.

Painted Oak

Maintenance

When painted, your product requires no maintenance other than cleaning with a damp cloth. The best result is obtained by wiping over with a dry cloth afterwards. Ordinary cleaning products may be used to remove stubborn dirt.

Note

Do not leave the painted product in direct contact with fluids, for example left standing in water or in contact with wet towels or clothes. The fluid may damage the surface on the painted product.

STAINLESS STEEL

Why

Stainless steel is a light and long-lasting material with superb strength and is easy to maintain.

Cleaning

Use soapy water and wipe with a dry cloth.

Maintenance

Minor scratches and oxide stains can be removed with a non-abrasive scouring pad. Care products such as Gleerustol can also be used. If used on kitchen utilities, always remember to wash it thoroughly after.

Caution

When using special care products you should avoid all contact with wood in order not to damage the surface. Do not use any kind of products containing chlorine as this will damage the surface and make it vulnerable to corrosion.

About Skagerak Sustainable Wood Sourcing

One important step towards a more sustainable design industry is to support responsible wood sourcing and forest management. That is why we endorse the Forest Stewardship Council™ by increasing the total share of FSCTM-certified wood in our production. Doing so, we help making sure that no more trees are felled than the forest can reproduce – and that local communities, biodiversity and forest workers are treated with respect. Since the FSCTM certification is covering some areas of the world more thoroughly than others, we also take in PEFCTM-certified wood from Canada and the like. The share of FSCTM-certified wood in our total production is currently 90% and we are working towards ensuring a 100% coverage by the end of 2025. We got our first FSC-certificate in 2003 and are proud members of FSC Denmark today as well. Look for the FSC logo displayed by our certified products.

The oak we use in production is from Europe. European forrests were some of the first to become FSC certified (FSCTM - C004462), which resulted in most of our indoor products becoming certified back in 2003, since then we have been working on getting our teak production certified.

Our teak is mainly from Central America and Indonesia, where they use a different certification. Using FSC certified wood is not a box-ticking exercise. We had to wait to get the right quality of teak and we also helped suppliers achieve certification. In this way we tried to bring about change for the greater good not just to meet metrics. Luckily more and more forrests are getting FSC certified due to popular demand.

Furthermore, we adhere to EU’s Timber Regulation from 2013. This means that the we perform due diligences on all shipments covered by the EUTR, to ensure that the wood comes from legal sources.
