PROPER USAGE AND MAINTENANCE

Proper usage and maintenance is vital for getting the most out of the valuable resources we have. Skagerak designs are made to last for generations, but just like everything else, they need a little care to get there.

OIL TREATED OAK VENEER

Origin

Oak with the botanical name Quercus spp. grows in most temperate zones. Skagerak oak comes from European forests.

Why

Oak is a sturdy and hardwearing type of wood. Furthermore, the Skagerak oak is FSC 100 % certified or FSC Mix certified. The selection of the wood is extremely careful and all processing is done by hand, so that only the best and most durable pieces of wood are used in production. Oak contains tannins which reduces bacterial growth in the wood.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Your new product comes with an oil treatment. For daily cleaning, use a damp cloth firmly wrung and be sure always to treat the entire surface evenly. The use of cleaning agents for daily cleaning is not recommended. Spills are to be removed immediately to minimize risk of lasting spots.

Oil treated products are to be retreated 1-2 times per year, depending on the use, to keep the protective layer on the surface and maintain the aesthetic qualities from the oil. For future treatment, use a suitable oil treatment product and follow the enclosed instructions carefully. Avoid contact of the oil with other materials to avoid spots and marks.

When retreating the surface, we recommend proceeding with consideration of the oak veneer on the table top. The first time the table is treated some of the wood fibres may rise and make the surface feel rough. If necessary lightly sand the surface with 220 grit sanding paper in the direction of the grain to achieve the best result. Always follow the specified safety instructions of the treatment product and use the recommended personal protective equipment.

Lastly, you should remember to retighten the table’s mounting bolts from time to time.

Note: Always use table mats or trivets when placing hot objects such as pots, pans and candle lights on the table.

About Skagerak Sustainable Wood Sourcing

One important step towards a more sustainable design industry is to support responsible wood sourcing and forest management. That is why we endorse the Forest Stewardship Council™ by increasing the total share of FSCTM-certified wood in our production. Doing so, we help making sure that no more trees are felled than the forest can reproduce – and that local communities, biodiversity and forest workers are treated with respect. Since the FSCTM certification is covering some areas of the world more thoroughly than others, we also take in PEFCTM-certified wood from Canada and the like. The share of FSCTM-certified wood in our total production is currently 90% and we are working towards ensuring a 100% coverage by the end of 2025. We got our first FSC-certificate in 2003 and are proud members of FSC Denmark today as well. Look for the FSC logo displayed by our certified products.

The oak we use in production is from Europe. European forrests were some of the first to become FSC certified (FSCTM - C004462), which resulted in most of our indoor products becoming certified back in 2003, since then we have been working on getting our teak production certified.

Our teak is mainly from Central America and Indonesia, where they use a different certification. Using FSC certified wood is not a box-ticking exercise. We had to wait to get the right quality of teak and we also helped suppliers achieve certification. In this way we tried to bring about change for the greater good not just to meet metrics. Luckily more and more forrests are getting FSC certified due to popular demand.

Furthermore, we adhere to EU’s Timber Regulation from 2013. This means that the we perform due diligences on all shipments covered by the EUTR, to ensure that the wood comes from legal sources.
